BKJ Architecture collaborated with Tallahassee Community College to reimagine the heart of their campus: the Student Union. Built in the 90’s, the building called for updated ceilings, millwork, finishes, and furnishings to revitalize and better utilize this integral student space. The project consisted of a multipurpose meeting room, food court dining, a gaming lounge, updated restrooms, and a student lounge/presentation space. Within these spaces, BKJ created and incorporated environmental graphics to create an even more dynamic space that emphasizes the school’s identity and speaks to the vernacular of the campus.

The new design leverages architectural features to define each area. Perforated metal panels create visual delineation, while maintaining the otherwise open floor plan.

The grand stair boasts a bold yellow underside with perforated metal railings, creating a dynamic element to welcome visitors into the student union. A newly installed under-stair seating area provides a touch-down space for visitors and students.

The student lounge serves as a multi-purpose room for gatherings, presentations, and other events. A large media wall and sound system readies this space for various events that will be hosted here. The specialty ceiling with integrated lighting serves as a dynamic wayfinding element.

Students can unwind after a busy day in this fun hangout spot featuring comfortable lounge seating and two widescreen gaming stations. Groups can enjoy friendly competition with noise-reducing elements such as carpet tile, soft upholstery, and geometric acoustic paneling.
Whether it's a quick bite or a fueled study session, ample seating options provide students with opportunities to enjoy their free time between classes.
